S1E35 - Thud!

Which side do you favor? Well, now it's time to learn the other side.

THUD is one of those books that sticks with you. There's a lot we love, and a few bits that we don't love so much. Most importantly, don't ever be late for story time.

We're joined this month by Dr. Kat Day!

Kat Day is a PhD chemist who was once a teacher and is now a writer and editor. By day she mostly works as an editor and proofreader of scientific materials, with bits of article and book-writing thrown in. By night she… mostly does all the stuff she hasn’t managed to do during the day.

She is an assistant editor at PseudoPod and her fiction can be found at Daily Science Fiction, Cast of Wonders and PseudoPod, among others. You can follow her on Twitter at @chronicleflask, or check out her blogs, The Fiction Phial and The Chronicle Flask. She lives with her husband, two children and cat in Oxfordshire, England.

Check out the recent flash fiction episode of Pseudopod featuring Kat's story, When I Was Young, I Did Not Need Magic!

S1E36 - Wintersmith

When you dance the Dark Morris in the place of the Summer Lady, stories happen. And just like winter and summer, not all of it is good--or bad. These are lessons we learn as we grow up.

Wintersmith is the 35th book in the Discworld series, and the third in the Tiffany Aching arc. It is a story about growing up, taking responsibility for situations that are not (or not entirely) your fault, and witches. It is about what you do when no one is looking, and when everyone is looking. Most of all, it is a story about Tiffany Aching.

We are joined once again by Dr. Kat Day!

S1E37 - Making Money

In which we discuss economic policy, the rule of law, and other things Vetinari has very specific ideas about.

What happens when you give the keys to the royal mint to a conman with a heart (and a suit) of gold? It's time to find out in Making Money, the 36th book in the Discworld series.

We are joined by two guests this month!

Dr. Holland Dougherty (@dochollandd) is a research scientist for CSIRO's future protein mission. Originally from south Florida, she now lives in Australia where she uses her love of biology and statistics to model sustainable agriculture and make the food we eat not just better in quality, but better for the planet. Besides her role as a professional cowologist/sheeponomist she enjoys knitting, hiking, nerding out about comic books, and consuming copious amounts of caffeine.

Rich Howard is a writer, podcaster, and game designer with a passion for all things superhero and aquatic. He is the concept lead for the RPG “Descent into Midnight”, co-creator and co-host of Whelmed: The Young Justice Files, and can be found guesting on gaming, pop culture, and science podcasts across the internet.

S1E38 - Unseen Academicals

The most important thing about football--it's not about the football.

This is a story about football. This is not a story about football. It can be both.

We return to Ankh-Morpork for the coda to the Dwarf Cultural Revolution, the continuation of Vetinari's modernization efforts, and a deep exploration of prejudice and racism. And also some footie.

And we are deeply honored to be joined this month by Rob Wilkins. Rob Wilkins worked with Terry Pratchett for over twenty years, first as his assistant, and later business manager. He now manages the Pratchett estate and Terry's production company, Narrativia. He can be found on Twitter managing the account he and Terry shared @terryandrob, if he's not too busy promoting the works of Sir Terry in various media or overseeing the next season of Good Omens. And if you haven't picked up a copy of Terry Pratchett: A Life with Footnotes: The Official Biography, please do.

S1E39 - I Shall Wear Midnight

We discuss the 38th book in the Discworld series, and the 4th book in the Tiffany Aching series, I Shall Wear Midnight! We are joined by Bitter Karella, creator of The Midnight Society.

Teenage witch Tiffany Aching confronts her greatest foe yet--the insidiousness of moral panic.

We are delighted to be joined by Bitter Karella! Bitter Karella is the writer and horror aficionado behind the microfiction comedy account @Midnight_pals, which asks what if all your favorite horror writers gathered around the campfire to tell scary stories. When not writing twitter jokes, she also dabbles in cartooning and text game design. Her horror text games, available on itchio, include Night House, All Visitors Welcome, Toadstools, and Santa Carcossa Nights. Learn more at http://www.bitterkarella.com/

S1E40 - Snuff

For the last official Sam Vimes book (and his first country gentleman-detective experience), we are delighted to be joined by Angry Staff Officer!

According to the writer of the best selling crime novel ever to have been published in the city of Ankh-Morpork, it is a truth universally acknowledged that a policeman taking a holiday would barely have had time to open his suitcase before he finds his first corpse.

We are joined to discuss Snuff by Angry Staff Officer (either a nom de plume or nom de guerre, we're not sure which). Angry Staff Officer is an on-again, off-again angry staff officer, who made the odd jump from enlisted infantry to engineer officer and is now meandering the warrens of Army doctrine, one dog-eared page at a time. Most often focused on historical events, national security, and occasional rants on Army doctrine. He can be found being cynical and jaded at the Twitter handle @pptsapper and writing at Point of Decision, as well as on Facebook and Instagram. He is a proud member of the Military Writers Guild, winning the Military Writer’s Guild award for most active member in 2015. His other key accomplishments include an intimate knowledge of far too many gins to be healthy, and having once live-tweeted the entire Star Wars saga.

S1E41 - Raising Steam

We discuss Raising Steam, the 40th Discworld Novel, with RPG designer Jennifer Adcock.

Steam power comes to the Disc, whether or not the Disc is ready for it. This book, which lays track (ha ha) for many changes in and around Ankh-Morpork, unfortunately instead became a farewell to many beloved characters. We discuss the book, the implications of the railway system, and a little bit of our wishlist for what might have happened... if...

We are joined by RPG designer Jennifer Adcock, who is, among other things, the designer of the GMless game The Price of Coal. She can be found on twitter at @jenkatwrites. and elsewhere if you're lucky.

Additionally, if you're not ready to read The Shepherd's Crown yet, mind how you go.

S1E42 - The Shepherd's Crown

Here we are. Spoilers abound.

We pare down to the core group for one last trip across the Disc, and Ana and Aaron finally read The Shepherd's Crown. Project wrap-up content starts at around 51:30, although it does continue to include Shepherd's Crown content.

Thanks to our many guests, but especially to you, our listeners. We would have done it regardless, but we hope that we inspired you to read or re-read Sir Terry's works, and we hope that you thought about things from a new angle.

We're not done quite yet, so don't delete this feed. More surprises coming soon.

Mind how you go.

GNU Terry Pratchett.

S2E1 - Tiffany Aching's Guide to Being a Witch

Featuring Gabrielle Kent and Rhianna Pratchett

Episode Notes

We were so incredibly pleased to be joined by Gabrielle Kent and Rhianna Pratchett, the co-authors of this new book in the Discworld library. Tiffany's story is one of our favorites, and having both more Tiffany and more witch stuff is just the best.

Tiffany Aching's Guide to Being a Witch would make a great holiday present! We're not sure yet of a US release date, so consider buying it directly from The Discworld Emporium or Discworld.com (and if other things just sort of happen to fall into your shopping basket... well, blame the Feegles).

If you want to check out the Mythical Creatures series Rhianna mentioned, keep an eye on the BBC Radio Four site as well as BBC Sounds. It looks like it starts airing December 18!

Gabrielle Kent is the author of the Alfie Bloom and Knights and Bikes series. She collaborated on the Rani Reports series with her husband as Gabrielle and Satish Shewhorak.

Gabrielle lives in the North East of England. She grew up in the 1980’s drawing castles and dragons, reading comics, and playing videogames. In the summers, she ran wild with her brothers and cousins on her Granny’s farm in Galway. Her first job was as a video-game artist working on games for PC, Playstation and XBox. She spent sixteen years as a university lecturer teaching students how to make videogames, and ran and hosted various games and animation festivals along the way.

She has always loved exploring castles and in 2006 she visited Castle Coch in Wales. As she looked at a carving of The Fates over one of the fireplaces, an idea for a story crept into her head. When she got home she started typing the story of Alfie Bloom, the boy who inherited a castle and has written many more books since.

Rhianna Pratchett has been a professional writer for several years. Having written numerous features and columns on games, movies and books and originally cutting her journalistic teeth on PC Zone magazine and The Guardian newspaper, Rhianna moved into script writing and narrative design in 2002. In 2007 her work on Heavenly Sword was nominated for a BAFTA and a year later she won a Writers’ Guild of Great Britain ’Best Videogame Script’ award for Overlord.

Alongside writing for videogames, she has also authored the Tomb Raider: The Beginning comics with Dark Horse and the 6-part Mirror’s Edge miniseries with DC Comics and several of her own short stories.

Rhianna has contributed to various books on games narrative including Professional Techniques for Video Game Writing (Edited by: Wendy Despain) and Game Writing: Narrative Skills for Videogames (Edited by: Chris Bateman). She also works with the IGDA Writers’ Special Interest Group, the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain and BAFTA Games to help improve games narrative and the lot of games writers everywhere.

Rhianna currently lives in London, with a couple of neurotic tabbies. True to British form, she drinks a lot of tea.
