S1E2 - The Colour of Magic

In which we land at the docks of Ankh-Morpork; The Tourist, The Luggage, and the Wizard?; who needs chapters anyway; Death is kind of a jerk; The Circumfence and hydrophobes; space, the final frontier.

This episode was our first outing, and just like the book, it's rough around the edges and wanders a bit. But that's ok, because there's a lot of great stuff in Colour that sometimes was even a delightful rediscovery for the veterans of the group.

S1E3 - The Light Fantastic

In which we meet an octogenarian barbarian; Death is less of a jerk; is this the apocalypse? it seems early for this time of year; r/menwritingwomen is cited; [cries in tech support]; Aaron comes up with his quantum observer theory; hoo boy is the dungeon dimension creepy.

The Light Fantastic is a slightly better book and we're a slightly better review team.

S1E4 - Equal Rites

In which we learn how a wizard is born, and what happens if it's not a boy; what witches do; wait, that guy was an apple tree?; Granny is bae; let's just remember that Esk is 8 years old here; which witch is which?; a very long journey for an 8 year old with a violent magic staff; Adventure! Excitement! Really Wild Stuff!; wizard/witch duel? wizard/witch duel!; the real magic was inside you all along. And it's gross in there.

Equal Rites is, to the more experienced readers, much closer to what we associate with Discworld novels. It's got a core argument and some characters we dearly love, it Says Something, it hides worldbuilding behind plot, and aside from some kinda rough edges it's a pretty decent book.

S1E5 - Mort

We tackle Mort, big dad energy, unpaid internships, and subtextual polycules.

Just putting it out there--Mort is a good book. Though we have some Thoughts about how to improve it further.

S1E6 - Sourcery

Another Rincewind book, replete with sex jokes, uncomfortable orientalism, a magic war, the apocralypse, a return to slightly pissy Death. Is this the Rincewind Reichenbach Falls? Maybe. Some of us wish it was.

Sourcery marks the first book with some disagreement among our hosts, but what would life be without some healthy, well-mannered debate? Strengths include solid lore-building regarding the wizards, including why they’re forbidden from boning down, and more of Terry’s musings on identity. Weaknesses include coherence as an overall novel and some uncomfortable orientalism. CW: frank discussion of child abuse in at 46:22 out at 55:13

May 25th, the first

Today is the Glorious 25th of May, and also for many people month mumblemumble of social distancing, so we thought we'd give you a special treat of all our silly goofs (at least the ones that Aaron saved once he figured out how).

Please donate to the Alzheimer's Association, Alzheimer's Research UK, or the Orangutan Foundation UK, in honor of Sir Terry. Wear the lilac, and how do the angels rise up?

S1E7 - Wyrd Sisters

In which the cast gets comfy and the writing gets GREAT. Just let the Shakespeare references flow through you like scrumble.

Wyrd Sisters is a great entry point book for Discworld. It's stacked to the rafters with solid female characters, it's the point at which Terry's exploration of witch magic gets really good, and it's a really fun read to boot. Plus there's a major cameo that killed us dead.

S1E8 - Pyramids

So this one's a challenge, because it's an okay book with some cool things pterry noodles with but GOSH is there a lot of British Egyptology. We brought in our good friend Amr to help us talk about exactly what was disappointing, and then apologize profusely as we discover this was their first Discworld book. Pros: Assassin's Guild is (mostly) good, there are some interesting explorations of myth and godhood. Cons: YIKES.

We're so happy to have had Amr as our first guest host... and so very sorry this was their first Discworld book. What was probably somewhat funny pop cultural references in 1990 turn out to be surprisingly offensive Orientalism in 2020. This may be one where we don't really recommend you read this, at least not early on in Discworld.

Amr Ammourazz (@ammourazz) is a game designer, podcaster, and all around nerd. You can hear them rambling about math on twitter, as a player on the Play/Test podcast, or find their game design on itch.io and a variety of other projects.

S1E9 - Guards! Guards!

Here we are--the first introduction to Sam and Sybil, Carrot, Colon, and Nobby. Vetinari is much more Vetinari-y. This is the entry point to Discworld for a LOT of fans, and it deserves every bit of praise.

Arguably the most famous of the Discworld plot threads, the Guards novels start with this story. Destiny, Dragons, Politics, Gender Roles and Subversions Thereof, and at least a few of Sam's ruminations on inequality and power. If Death is Sir Terry's authorial self-insert, Sam Vimes is Sir Terry's moral self-insert. If you love noir, urban fantasy, high fantasy, cults, or surprisingly relevant political satire, you will find something to like in this book. Just don't ask for your figgin to be toasted.
